high tea at the loft

October 2, 2009

I am not the kind of girl that many would call “polished”. I am trying though – donning the occasional dress, wearing neutral coloured pumps, pinning my hair up and sweeping my lashes with mascara. And, I must admit, it’s kinda fun. Not the same kind of fun one can have when decked out in shorts, high tops and a t-shirt, with hair bundled into what-was-once-a-ponytail, but fun nonetheless herunterladen.

My best friend Miss Shiny, on the other hand, is far more polished than I’ll ever be. Curls neatly in place. Patterned stockings set off against a 1950’s style skirt that nips in at the waist and finishes with a bow. Cropped coats and a dab of lipstick. I can’t wear lipstick even when I try.

It makes sense, then, that it is she who has brought me here to the Loft at King Street Wharf photo download it iphone naar mac. “Wear your pretty clothes Shey” she tells me over the phone “we’re going on a double date.”

By the time she arrives to pick me up, I have changed three times, curled my hair then straightened it and managed to get mascara on my cheek. “You look so pretty!” she says. “I think I need sunnies. And a scarf. And a cardi.” I reply. “Don’t wear your nanna cardi cash systems for free. Please?” she yells after me, and I guiltily drop it back onto my bed.

Miss Shiny has been here before, and (loving it so) decided that it was high time I came along. We arrive to see two lovely ladies already waiting for us (one of whom works with Miss Shiny, the other being her BFF).

Tea menus are provided and poured over intently sims herunterladen mac. We smell the Madagascan Vanilla tea even before it is poured from its gorgeous glass receptacle into an equally dainty glass teacup. The Blue Mountain is soothing and calm like a breath of floral mountain air.

Miss Shiny’s Gorgeous Geisha arrives with a heady scent of strawberries and cream but only a hint of its flavour when tasted bücher über vpn herunterladen. And mine? Sencha Quince. It is an aromatic quince infused sencha green tea with blue cornflower petals. And, the avid tea drinker that I am, it is right up my alley.

“There’s a mocktail called “Lardi-Dar!” Miss Shiny”
I whisper, poking her not-so-discreetly in the ribs download avira antivir. She shakes her head at the grin that is sweeping across my face. “Would you like one Shey?” she asks, and, seeing me nod offers to share it with me.

I am disappointed that it doesn’t come in a teapot, like the cocktails do, but am quickly appeased by its vivid red colour, fruity flavour and slightly bitter tea aftertaste fortnite auf playstation herunterladen.

Before long, the food arrives on two tall three-tiered stands. The wrought iron is a lovely touch, and I wonder if I can manage to sneak one out without being noticed.

top tier: lemon meringue pie, frangipane tart, chocolate brownie, jam

top tier: lemon meringue pie, frangipane tart, chocolate brownie, jam

The top tier carries an assortment of sweets Download prime video to mac. The brownie is rich and gooey, speckled with chunks of white chocolate and macadamias. The lemon meringue tart reminds me of a part of the human anatomy and I can’t help but giggle.

On cutting it open, I am faced with a gooey white meringue and a fluorescent yellow curd. It is thickened with a starch base and not the eggy kind of curd that I prefer, but I am not unhappy with it at all thunderbird update. There is also what I assume to be a pistachio frangipane tart.

the middle tier: scones, cream & chocolate truffle

the middle tier: scones, cream & chocolate truffle

The middle tier holds the ever present scone and cream combination (the jam having been placed on the top tier). Sadly the jam isn’t anything quite as lovely as the Hank’s Jam that I am accustomed to, and is rather too sweet for my tastebuds. It doesn’t faze me though, because there is a whole bowl of softly whipped cream for my consumption…

bottom tier: assorted sandwiches & frittata

bottom tier: assorted sandwiches & frittata

Savouries are found down the bottom, which is actually where we start our little feast Nero burning rom free full version. I try as best I can to eat the frittata, but my aversion to all things orange vegetable gets the better of me and I pass most of this to Miss Shiny.

The sandwiches are somewhat traditional. A sliced cucumber sandwhich, on white bread of course, lends a dainty touch to the platter. Smoked salmon and cream cheese is as classic as can be, though the salmon distribution methods employed leave some to be desired and oh. There’s also a chicken sandwich.

I must admit, it was just a little bit alarming. For here, between two quarter slices of crustless white bread, is chicken pie filling. Creamy. Warm-ish. And mushroomy. Very. Very. Odd.

The sun is setting and I am getting full. From sandwiches! And cake! I know! An accidental inhalation of cocoa dust from the chocolate truffle leaves me coughing and spluttering and giggling like a sixteen year old who’s had too much champagne, and all semblence of composure is gone.

It was fun though, playing dress ups, and when my high heels and I trot out of the Loft, I’m left with just the good memories. The sun as it played on the water. The look on Miss Shiny’s face when she saw the stands come to the table. The chatter of four girls without a care in the world.

And I didn’t even smudge my makeup.

Looks lovely. I really enjoy the concept of afternoon tea but have only ever tried it in hotels or either of The Tea Rooms. Must round up some girlfriends to give this place a try – nothing like an excuse for dress-ups!
