Birthdays (not mine) are exciting occasions. An excuse to spoil your nearest and dearest without the additional barrier of “pai sei” that usually comes with.
(“pai sei” – hokkien. Also known as that awkward attempt to deferentially and only semi-wholeheartedly decline a gift because it would lead to an inequality in the friendship wherein one person is supposedly taking more than they have given and no, I couldn’t possibly accept that because the world may explode as a result. Truly. I’m doing it for your own good. Oh you really want me to have it? Well thanks then, I will. Hm.)

“Our land abounds in nature’s gifts of beauty rich and ra-a-a-aaare…”
Happy almost-Australia Day all! (And good morning to those of you who have just this moment realised that I’m based in Australia. Hi!)
This year you’re all getting an early post as I’ll be swanning around in Melbourne and soaking up as much of the tennis-filled vibe as I possibly can. I’m really looking forward to it. Not least of all because it will be the first time since forever that I’ll be watching two people that I’ve never met play a live game of tennis.
(Please don’t judge.)
It’ll also be onebitemore’s second birthday on Australia Day (just my luck to share a birthday with a country…) so tune in to see a recap of some of my favourite edible moments of the past 365 or so days.

It was an immensely difficult decision to make, and one that I am still coming to terms with in alternating waves of excitement and trepidation.
But the news, it is out there. And the relief I felt when I was finally able to tell my colleagues was beyond description.

I remember a Summer, not so long ago, when a German wandered into our bundle of friends. He was on a one year trip, in between something-or-other, and had decided to spend three weeks in Sydney.
We dubbed him “German”. Or, rather, I dubbed him German (for there were too many Davids around as it was) and took him along to the beach, and the mountains, and showed him what a whole, raw chicken looked like for the very first time in his twenty-something-year-old life.

I have so many things that I could write about this honeycomb.
My semi-despair at the never-depleting vat of chestnut honey from which the honeycomb draws its earth, mellow flavour.
The delighted expressions that adorned our faces when the bicarbonate of soda was added to the mixture and golden bubbles abounded.
The Bean’s cheeky chocolate-covered grin as she stuck the pair of chopsticks I’d given to her for dipping with straight into her mouth instead.
