Now that the weather is (finally) taking a turn for the cooler and we’ve no more got the excuse of “but it was just Christmas!” to explain away our kitchen lethargy, it seems there is nothing to do but get back into the swing of things.

Home cooked meals. Preferably at least 50% vegetable matter. No-dessert-days.

Hey you! (Yes, you.) Put down that extra slice of cake.

My oven is broken.

I don’t know what happened to it and I don’t know how to fix it.

The timer still works, as does the little dial that allows you to change the oven setting and also the temperature, but the oven itself? The heating element and the fan at the back?

Zilch. Nothing. Nada. Dead.

Which made my original plan for today’s post just a little bit more difficult than I imagined it would be.

We repeated the sounds dutifully after our teacher, trying to read along with the Hiragana characters written on the blackboard.

“Ra.” Curled up like a rabbit looking over its shoulder. Ears flapping in the wind.

“Ri.” Two reeds sitting in a river.

“Ru.” A hand holding a precious ruby.

“Ro.” A hand without the ruby – stolen by a robber.

Summer time and the livin’ is easy…

Unless you’re a vegetarian at a barbecue (or so I’ve heard from my meatless mates).

“Sure there’s veggie patties and soy sausages” they say to me, resignedly, “but it’d be so nice – just for once – to be the one with an enviable portion of food instead of the poor sod with a disintegrating tofu burger because someone mistook silken for firm.”

(And yes, I know nobody really talks like that, but I’ve a habit of paraphrasing badly).
