It was 7:25am on a not-so-sunny Saturday morning and I had roused the VTB from his sleep with a fervent phone call.
“I’m leaving the house in 5 minutes. If you’re planning on taking a shower, now’s the time.”
It was 7:53am when I pulled up outside the VTB’s place of residence.
“Hop in! It’s about to start! And I have no idea how to get there!”

It was upon me before I even saw it coming.
Sydney International Food Festival (fondly known as SIFF) has replaced what was once called Good Food Month, and with the name change has come a plethora of brand new events and offers for those lucky enough to live in (or be visiting) Sydney during October. Among the new arrivals? The World Chef Showcase, which was held this last weekend at the Star City Conference Rooms.

One of the things I love about being a foodblogger is getting suggestions on where to eat (and what to cook) from friends, family & readers. Unfortunately, with the rest of my life whirling around me at a rapid pace, it’s not often that I get around to everything I want to try. So I was amused and delighted in equal parts when my mother came bounding down the stairs, one weekday evening, to say that the W’s had asked if we would all like to go to a crayfish party at Ikea on the 20th of August, and that I should probably bring my camera along.

It’s not every day that one gets to rub shoulders with a chef like Tom Kime, so I was thrilled beyond belief when he agreed to sit down and have a chat with me.
You haven’t heard of him? Neither had I til I found myself seated in one of his cooking classes, courtesy a client event at work. In Australia, he’s probably best known for his appearances on daytime program “Ready, Steady, Cook!” – but in the homeland (being England) he’s better known for his four books, two restaurants, assorted television appearances (including one currently on the BBC that he did with Rick Stein) and, oh, for cooking Jamie Oliver’s wedding.

“So, what’s your signature dish then?” It’s a question you get asked a lot as a foodblogger. That, and “What’s your favourite restaurant?” And, being the jack-of-all-trades / master-of-none that I am, I invariably find myself stumped. Even the question “What’s your favourite cuisine?” is a difficult one for me. Is it the warm, fragrant, gritty homeliness I love about Malaysian cuisine? The clean, subtle, exquisite nature of Japanese? The gutsy, vibrant, unapologetic food of the Italians? I really don’t know. But I have had to make my mind up and pick. A signature dish, that is (I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to pick an answer to the other two). And I think I’m ok with my choice.
