It has become tradition, over the last ten or so years since the girls & I left school, for us to gather for a meal around Christmas time.
What started as a fairly simple wrap-your-own-Vietnamese-rice-paper-rolls party (complete with tinsel halos and seasonally appropriate attire) has now become a full blown, Shez-hosted, annual pot luck affair with a specially selected culinary theme to boot.
Which, of course (for me) means an excuse to dress the table.

“Our land abounds in nature’s gifts of beauty rich and ra-a-a-aaare…”
Happy almost-Australia Day all! (And good morning to those of you who have just this moment realised that I’m based in Australia. Hi!)
This year you’re all getting an early post as I’ll be swanning around in Melbourne and soaking up as much of the tennis-filled vibe as I possibly can. I’m really looking forward to it. Not least of all because it will be the first time since forever that I’ll be watching two people that I’ve never met play a live game of tennis.
(Please don’t judge.)
It’ll also be onebitemore’s second birthday on Australia Day (just my luck to share a birthday with a country…) so tune in to see a recap of some of my favourite edible moments of the past 365 or so days.

You’d think that I would have made one by now, right?
I mean everyone who was anyone whipped out their bandaids and spun toffee around a tower of choux when the masterchef craze hit last year. Surely I would have been amongst them.
Plus I had one for my 21st birthday cake (true story – I still hadn’t adapted to eating “cake” at that stage). I must have been tempted to see if it was really all that hard.
But I hadn’t. And I wasn’t. And in truth, I was scared stiff because toffee & I? We’re only just getting to know each other.

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but I’m not the type to make a big ol’ hoo-hah about pretty.
Flavour? Yes. All the time. And even if it’s a big sloppy pile of brown in a not-very-chic bowl.
Actually, make that especially if it’s a big sloppy pile of brown in a not-very-chic bowl. Most of my favourite foods can be described just so.
But then! A revelation!
