miss chu (part 1)

August 17th, 2009

It all started with a call from M. “There’s this place here, in the paper, that we need to go to. See what you can find out about it.” I was hesitant. If it’s in the papers, it’s usually been done to death… and I was looking for a quiet lunch spot. An undiscovered mecca of deliciousness mixed with a quirky aesthetic and an immediately likeable concept. “Err… I dunno.” I responded. “Look.” said he “I’ll send you the link. Some Strode guy said it’s his favourite place to get rice paper rolls, and the only other place in the article I want to eat at is in Vietnam ok?” Well then! And so, “We’re going.” said I. “Friday. 12:30. Lock and load.” …continue reading miss chu (part 1)

good morning best friend

August 14th, 2009

I have learnt a number of things since starting “this whole food blogging thing” (as certain of my friends are wont to dub it). I now know how to make a buttercream frosting, which knife is used for which purpose (despite not owning a set of my own) and what is meant when someone talks about umami. ramen gumshara

And thus I was initiated on a not-quite-cold winter’s day with the one and only chocolatesuze who was aching to escape the chaos and prices of the Good Food & Wine Show for a lunchtime break.

merivale winter feasts: lotus

I called them up at 6:35pm, just to be sure. “Hello… where are you both?” I ask, cautiously, not wanting to seem like I was rushing them. “We are… somewhere!” came the reply. And then a flurry of words: “She knows where she’s going.” “No I don’t!” “Yes she does! We’re on Castlereagh Street. Is that close? Are you on Castlereagh Street?” “Hey, I know where we are!” “We’ll be there soon! See youuuuu” I hang up and within minutes, am leaping into the car to a chorus of “Hello!” “You’re in charge of directions now. Where do we go?” and ” Hey, your shirt is in the bag”.

a bit of change…

July 1st, 2009

…is a good thing when you’re running for the bus and rummaging through your pockets.

…is good for you when it means new opportunities and more exposure.

…is wonderfully character building in retrospect.

…can get you a fairly decent meal when the other kind of change is looming. …continue reading a bit of change…
