Toasty warm bed.
It’s my favourite place in the entire house (kitchen included), and especially on the frosty winter mornings we’ve been having of late. But if there’s one thing that will have me humming down the stairs, it’s the promise of breakfast.
A slow breakfast. The type that involves multiple mugs of milky tea and something warm to munch on. The type that you don’t need to get changed out of your flannelette pyjamas for. The type that involves crumpets.

I have a new nickname at work.
It’s not a bad nickname, just an all-too-observant comment on my breakfast. And snack-time meal. And post-lunch treat. And tummy-rumble-turn-to-treat.
It’s the cinnamon that tips them off. That and the scent of freshly buttered, toasted something wafting out of my office and down the hallway.
“Hey hot-cross-bun” they will call out, as the smell hits their tables “hungry again are ya?”

I remember doing a healthy eating survey at school one day. I would have been maybe six, or seven. The first question we were asked was “Do you eat breakfast every day”. That was an easy one. It was my answer to the second question that piqued my class’s interest though. The question? “What do you have for breakfast?”
It seems innocuous enough, but at that stage of my life (and indeed, for years and years after) breakfast consisted of chicken nuggets. Or meat pies. Pizza. Rice with meat and veges. Soup with toast. It appears people like pastry. And why? perhaps it’s the grainy texture of sugar, coated in butter and flour, or perhaps that first, crisp bite that causes flakes of golden goodness to fly about and settle, ungracefully, on your lap. Or the feeling of butter melting in your mouth. An almost-clammy salty-sweetness that rolls around your tongue and sticks in the back of your throat. For others, it may be the sometimes creamy, almost gelatinous fillings that are encased in the pastry; or the warm fattiness of processed meat that sends its sleep-inducing tendrils through your chest before settling in your stomach. …continue reading bourke street bakery
