date & cranberry oatmeal cookies

Guilt.  Confusion.  Heartbreak.

Nervousness.  Excitement.  Relief.

If you’ve been following my tweets (@onebitemore) you may have noticed, in amongst my other natterings, that I’ve made the decision to pull up stumps and move jobs.  It was an immensely difficult decision to make, and one that I am still coming to terms with in alternating waves of excitement and trepidation.

But the news, it is out there.  And the relief I felt when I was finally able to tell my colleagues was beyond description.

The Bean, she has a rabbit. And that rabbit’s name is Ah-Bee.

The rabbit was named after a soft-toy-long-lost-at-Dreamworld, and the soft toy after the moniker given to the Bean as a child. Ah-Bee, you see, is loosely translated as “baby duckling”, and boy can that girl pout.

raspberry & rosewater macarons

You should have seen the look on my face. Two printed sheets in plastic sleeves, complete with highlighting and annotation. Two hours of pacing around the kitchen. Twelve tense minutes staring at the oven door. Ten minutes of eyes scrunched into themselves, lips murmuring “C’mon work work work!” One misread instruction and one minor panic attack. One slightly fed up mother and a spatula.

And then, miraculously, they were done. Slightly glossy outer shell? Check! Chewy melting centre? Check! Feet? Check! My very first batch of macarons, sans catastrophic failure? Hurrah!

“Ok, enough with the pistachios already girl!” I can hear the voices coming at me out of my computer screen. “In case you haven’t noticed, they aren’t cheap and we’re in the middle of a bit of a belt-tightening phase, if you know what I mean?” Why, yes. Yes I do. But you know what? Try taking a wander out of your local big-chain-supermarket and into the little grocer down the street instead. No, not a providore or a fancy we-sell-single-origin-everything store. The one that sells cauliflower for $1.50 a head in winter. Yes. That one.

ginger, choc & walnut cookies

mainpictureI do not like feeling swamped. But, for me, even worse than the feeling of being swamped is the feeling of being listless. Helpless. Uninspired and unmotivated. I can churn out one brilliant idea after the other when I am swamped, I will hustle towards an end goal and then slam that final ball into that final hoop before collapsing in a puddle of exhaustion and selfcongratulatory thoughts. But when I am listless – oh! I crumple into a ball of miserable ineptitude and discard all thoughts of ever recovering.
