dbc: ice-cream cake

July 29th, 2010

The July 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Sunita of Sunita’s world – life and food. Sunita challenged everyone to make an ice-cream filled Swiss roll that’s then used to make a bombe with hot fudge. Her recipe is based on an ice cream cake recipe from Taste of Home.

(and let’s just say that it’s taken me a big kick in the you-know-where in order for me to rise to this particular challenge.)

“And why?” you may ask, scratching your head at the thought that any single person would not want to spend three-sessions-of-precious-free-time making a chocolate sponge swiss roll cake that is filled with a cacophony of ice-cream.

Or perhaps the question really is, “why not?

To be honest (and if I am anything other than honest around here, please flame my comments), I’ve been having a hard time doing just about anything of late.

Getting out of bed, for example. Heading to my reasonably-stressful job through the grey muck of wet weather in Sydney. Constructing a sentence that makes sense in my head as well as out of it. Remembering not to buy cheese on account of the kilos of it that lurk in my fridge. Staying in contact with friends and family. Dressing myself in a manner that doesn’t scream “somebody got dressed with her eyes shut”.

But there is always an upside.

Rolling up the cake in tea towels and heading out to the Rocks for a coffee festival, for starters. (This, despite being my non-caffeinated self!) Sending messages to the Bean about trains of camels, whale sharks and leisure craft and repeating my incoherent self on twitter. Walking back home with the VTB and the Bean whilst playing the “No Air” game (“Can’t step in a puddle and splash the VTB with no ai-ir!” “Can’t eat too much sugar and rage like a lunatic with no AI-IR!”)

And then, much later, folding coffee and chicory essence through a batch of my favourite no-churn-no-fuss ice cream mixture and buzzing like a little kid after a whole stick of fairy floss (!) and tossing raspberries in the other half of a batch notwithstanding that the two don’t necessarily work particularly well together.

“They’re both essentially berries” said my brain. “It’ll be fine!”

And even later than that, trying to layer semi-frozen cream mixes in an orange melamine soup bowl that is only ever brought out into the daylight when it’s har-mee time. And trying to see if the prawny smell remained on the bowl’s interior.

I’ve been struggling. With life. With myself. With just about everything.

But I’m working on it. I’m taking baby steps. I’m getting better.

And… erm… I really hope you don’t like swiss roll ice-cream cakes, because I’m pretty sure I’m never making one of these again.

Mainly because it looks a lot like a creamy, frozen, bleached, interior-layered brain.

(“Can’t pretend your dessert doesn’t look like a blood-clotted brain with NO AII-III-IIIRRRRRR!” – take that Jordin Sparks.)

Great icecream cake despite life being so hectic! Don’t we all just cram so much in. My (broken) New Years Resolution was to say no to more and lead a more relaxed lifestyle doing the things I love. Try again next year!
