lunchbreak: chicken rice

July 18th, 2009

chickenrice

There has long been debate about where a person can get the best hainan chicken rice in the city. I’ve been all over – believe you me – and despite fair efforts by Jimmy’s, Malay Chinese, BaBa & assorted others, I can’t go past this lot.

For a grand total of $8.50 you’ll get a quarter of a chicken (specify leg or breast), a bowl of lovely fragrant chicken rice & a bowl of broth.

Where at?

Sayong Curry & Laksa
303 Pitt St, LG Food Court, Pittsway Arcade
Sydney, NSW 2000

(which means, in useful directions, turn in off Pitt St at the Vodafone store, bustle down the stairs and head for the far left corner once you hit the bottom)

[edit: Hi all! Funny thing, I'm in Hainan right now on the last night of a four night tour of the island. Gorgeous place once you get out of the city, and strangely bereft of anything that resembles the Hainan Chicken Rice you see in the picture above. Strange no? Anyways - the posts are going to keep on keeping on, and I'll do my best to read and respond to the comments as and when I have internet access. Much love!!]

thanks for the tip. will definitely be checking this place out for lunch next week. this must be the one under woolworths in that Asian food court area? from Sayong i’ve also had the ipoh fried koay teow and seafood laksa which have been pretty good, check them out next time. i’ve been to all the others you’ve mentioned too for chicken rice.

  2. 2 Steph says on :

Interesting….I didn’t know about this place. I’m always on the hunt for good chicken rice, will have to check this out now thanks :)

  3. 3 shez says on :

    @Simon: That’s the one! It’s a really decent feed.

@Steph: It’s only open weekdays and only from about 11am to 3pm. Oh, and it gets busy around lunchtime, so immediately before or after is probably best :)

  4. 4 FFichiban says on :

Oohh must try this place too! Haha maybe I can go to Jimmy’s and Sayong in one lunch sitting hmmm XD

  5. 5 Helen (grabyourfork) says on :

Looks great and oh the happy coincidence of Hainan Chicken Rice being Poh’s chosen dish in the Masterchef Finale tonight :)

  6. 6 Mr. Taste @ tastedbytwo says on :

Love Hainan chicken rice. But I need to live with the super crappy food court version out here in Macquarie. Damn all you city workers and all your awesome lunch places

  7. 7 shez says on :

@Ffichiban: You know I wouldn’t be surprised if you could…

@Helen: Oh really?! Can’t believe I missed the final week of masterchef. have been reading episode recaps online but it’s not really the same is it?

@Mr. Taste: Ahh, but you don’t have to deal with the city in all its rush hour crazy-glory. That and coming into the city on the weekend doesn’t feel at all like work for you :)

  8. 8 Simon Food Favourites says on :

hi shez, i had it for lunch yesterday. was good. i had the leg but i reckon the breast would be just as tender. will try next time.

  9. 9 shez says on :
